Crestone Studio: Architectural Stonework Restoration at 285 Central Park West – The St. Urban, New York

Crestone Studio took on the restoration of 285 Central Park West also known as The St. Urban. As the building continues to age, various restoration projects have been undertaken in recent years to maintain the building’s architectural beauty and integrity. Crestone Studio is honored to be part of this important preservation effort, focusing specifically on the on restoring the architectural stonework that defines much of the building’s historic character.

Project Highlights:

  • Terracotta Replacement:We replaced the old, damaged terracotta elements that had deteriorated beyond repair. During the process, it became clear that the original stones, treated with glazing, could not be salvaged. This required us to take a fresh approach, crafting new pieces that not only matched the original design but also provided improved durability, ensuring the structure’s longevity while preserving its aesthetic integrity.
  • Ribbed Texture Matching:While exact color matching wasn’t necessary, as the stones would eventually be painted, Crestone Studio ensured that the ribbed texture of the original terracotta was precisely replicated. This attention to detail helped maintain the architectural integrity and design continuity of the building, ensuring that the new elements seamlessly integrated with the existing structure.
  • Acid Washing for Glazing Adhesion: To improve the durability of the new terracotta elements, our team performed an acid wash on the stone units. This important step improved the adhesion of the glazing material, ensuring a longer-lasting finish that would withstand the elements and preserve the beauty of 924 West End Avenue.
  • Commitment to Quality:Quality was at the forefront of every step, from selecting the right and best materials to the careful installation of the terracotta elements. Crestone Studio’s dedication to precision ensured that every detail, texture, and finish upheld the highest standards.
